Appreciation is the increase in the value of an asset over time. In real estate, appreciation is calculated by subtracting the purchase price from the sales price. In real estate, appreciation can be one of the biggest generators of wealth.

To calculate appreciation, simply take the current asset value and subtract the original value (or purchase price.)
