As investors we tend to prefer certain asset classes (Cash, equities, bonds, etc) over others and that is a sub-optimal strategy. For example equities or real estate are some preferred asset classes but having only those asset classes will not help you maximise returns and minimise risks

It is best to learn about different asset classes so that one can spread the risk and accelerate returns. I have covered some of the important asset classes in fair details.
